ODDSBRIEFING
The Newsletter That Finds Money Where Bookmakers Don't
Issue 37 | Week of 4-6 September 2026 | Five plays · 11.0% risked
A red week does not create new edge. It creates a smaller bankroll. So 16.5% risked becomes 11.0%, nothing goes above 2.5%, and Liverpool at 1.51 is a pass rather than a recovery bet. ⚡
📋 How To Read This Card
The lines. A level ball (+0) refunds on a draw. A -2.0 refunds an exactly two-goal win and pays in full on three or more. A -0.5 is simply a win bet, with no refund. Four of the five plays keep a protection layer; Como does not, which caps it at 2%.
The numbers. Fair value is our working handicap for the fixture. A -2.25 fair line against a market -2.0 says the favourite should be giving more than the market asks. The percentages compare the chance of a full win after the push is stripped out where applicable. Ours comes first. Under three points of edge does not make the card.
Fact, model, opinion. Results, prices, league data and team news are fact. Fair values and percentages are working model output. Anything about where a price will move is our opinion, labelled as our read.
Floor is the price below which the bet is off. Headline prices are live market references checked Friday morning 4 September. We use Betfair Exchange where the exact line is liquid and Asian/DNB books where it is not. Same instrument, or no bet.
📈 Performance Snapshot

Seven plays last week: two winners, one push, four losses. Week 35 returned -5.88%. Milan and Udinese cashed in full, Inter pushed after a 1-0 win at Cagliari, while Lyon, Liverpool, Häcken and Leverkusen failed to win their positions. YTD +49.85% across 35 weeks: 24 green, 11 red.
The honest read. The protection worked once, exactly where it should: Inter won by one and the -1.0 returned the stake. The four losses were not handicap failures; the favourites failed outright. The answer is not more complicated protection. It is fewer positions and less capital at risk.
What this number is, and is not. Additive, not compounded: each week's percentage return on a flat 100-unit bankroll, summed. 149.85 is the additive tracker index, not a compounded account balance. Settled at published prices, no losing week omitted. Quarterly totals remain tracker-exact; reply for the workbook.
🎯 The Sharp Take: Manchester City v Coventry
Premier League — Matchweek 3 | Saturday 5 September, 15:00 BST | Etihad Stadium | The House
Manchester City -2.0 @ 1.75 | 2.5% stake | Floor 1.68
The favourite is 1.17 to win the match. That is not the bet. The bet is getting the stake back if City stop at exactly two.
What the market is missing. City are two from two under Enzo Maresca and have scored six league goals. Coventry arrive newly promoted and with ten senior additions still being integrated. The market is already certain about the winner; the value question is the winning margin, and the whole-goal line gives us a refund at exactly two.
The model's number. Working fair value -2.25. At 1.75 we make a full cover roughly 61% against a market around 57%, a four-point gap. The House: "A favourite priced at 1.17 is not a reason to bet 1.17. The refund at exactly two is the reason to bet -2."
Our take — and the stat against us. 2.5%, not 3%. Maresca is new, Enzo Fernández arrived only this week, and Coventry have enough Premier League experience in the new group to keep the game from becoming a procession. They do not need to be competitive for 90 minutes to turn a three-goal win into exactly two. That is why -2.0 is the bet and -2.25 is not.
⏰ Execution. Saturday morning, after Maresca's press conference and team news. Our read: Asian depth should improve through Friday night and Saturday morning. Off below 1.68.
🔥 This Week's Plays
City is covered in full above. The other four plays, plus one line we are deliberately leaving alone.
🔥 HIGH CONVICTION
Schalke v Bayern Munich | Bayern -2.0 @ 1.62 | 2.5% stake
Bundesliga MD2 | Saturday 5 September, 18:30 CEST | VELTINS-Arena | Nielsen
Edge. Bayern opened the title defence 5-1 against Stuttgart and followed with a 4-1 cup win at Osnabrück. The Bundesliga matchday briefing lists four Schalke absences plus captain Kenan Karaman as doubtful. Bayern list no confirmed outs, but Gnabry and Musiala are doubtful. At 1.62, our 65% full-cover estimate is a little over three points above the market.
Risk. The 5-1 opener has already made Bayern expensive, and the attacking doubts are worth waiting on. Exactly two remains a very live landing point away from home. -2.0 is the ceiling; we do not surrender the refund for a prettier price.
⏰ Execution. Saturday afternoon after final team confirmation. Floor 1.57.
Genoa v Como | Como -0.5 @ 1.87 | 2.0% stake
Serie A MD3 | Friday 4 September, 20:45 CEST | Stadio Luigi Ferraris | Hayes
Edge. Genoa have zero points and zero league goals after defeats to Napoli and Lazio. Como opened with a draw at Udinese and then won at Napoli. Betfair is 1.87 this morning and the wider market sits roughly 1.80-1.89. Our fair price is 1.75: about 57% against a market near 53.5%.
Risk. This is the only play on the card without a refund outcome. Genoa have not suddenly become harmless because they have not scored, and Como's Napoli win is already in the price. That is why a four-point edge gets 2%, not 2.5%.
⏰ Execution. Right now. It kicks off tonight and the exchange is already liquid. Floor 1.80.
Hoffenheim v Borussia Dortmund | Dortmund level ball (+0) @ 1.69 | 2.0% stake
Bundesliga MD2 | Saturday 5 September, 15:30 CEST | PreZero Arena | Nielsen
Edge. Dortmund draw-no-bet is available around 1.69, the shape we want with an away favourite carrying real defensive absences. Our fair price is 1.60: about 62.5% against a market near 59%. We are not asking Dortmund to dominate, only to be the more likely winner once the draw is removed.
Risk. The Bundesliga briefing has Dortmund without Can, Inácio, Konstantelias, Lerma and Schlotterbeck, while Hoffenheim have no confirmed outs. That imbalance is exactly why we refuse -0.25. The draw refund is buying us protection against a patched Dortmund back line.
⏰ Execution. Saturday morning. If the back line gets any worse, pass rather than chase the price. Floor 1.64.
👀 LINE WATCH — NOT A PLAY: Ipswich v Liverpool | Liverpool 1.51
Premier League MD3 | Friday 4 September, 20:00 BST | Portman Road | No stake
Why we pass. Liverpool are still searching for a first league win after consecutive 2-2 draws. Their own injury bulletin rules out Conor Bradley and Hugo Ekitike, with Joe Gomez not due back in team training until next week and Giovanni Leoni targeted for the international break. Bradley Barcola is available, but Iraola says his lack of pre-season minutes still has to be managed. At 1.51, the price asks us to ignore too much uncertainty.
The temptation. At 1.51 the outright price looks too small, so the natural move is to climb to -1.0 or -1.25. Do not solve a bad price by taking a worse instrument. Ipswich beat Sunderland before the 5-2 loss at Old Trafford and have already shown they will attack games.
⏰ Execution. None. No bet is a position. We revisit Liverpool when the defence and price stop disagreeing.
📊 MEDIUM CONVICTION
Everton v Manchester United | Manchester United level ball (+0) @ 1.63 | 2.0% stake
Premier League MD3 | Sunday 6 September, 14:00 BST | Hill Dickinson Stadium | McGill
Edge. United responded to the Hull loss with five against Ipswich, Bruno Fernandes scoring a hat-trick. Everton are unbeaten early but the market still makes United the more likely winner. Draw-no-bet is around 1.63; our fair price is 1.54, roughly 65% against a market near 61%.
Risk. One five-goal afternoon does not prove the Hull performance was an outlier, and Everton have not lost yet. That is why the draw comes out of the equation. We want United to be better, not spectacular, and 2% is enough until the performance travels.
⏰ Execution. Sunday morning after team news. Floor 1.58.

📍 Where to Bet
Price policy this week: Betfair Exchange where the exact instrument is liquid; Asian/DNB books where it is not. City -2.0 is 1.75, Bayern -2.0 is around 1.62, Dortmund +0 around 1.69, United +0 around 1.63, and Como is 1.87 on Betfair this morning. The floor, not the headline, decides whether the bet still exists.
Do not improve a headline by changing the instrument. Bayern -2.25 is not Bayern -2.0, and City -2.25 is not City -2.0. The whole number is part of the edge because exactly two is a plausible landing point. If the exact line is gone or below the floor, pass.
⚠️ Trap Game Alert: the bigger Manchester City number
Manchester City v Coventry | Saturday 5 September, 15:00 BST | we are on -2.0 and nothing beyond it
The narrative trap. City are 1.17 to win, have six points from two matches and just scored four at Palace. Coventry are newly promoted. The obvious conclusion is that -2.0 is timid and the money is in -2.25 or -2.5.
The reality. A huge favourite can dominate and still win by exactly two. City have a new manager, Enzo Fernández arrived this week, and Coventry have added ten senior players. Every quarter-goal you add gives away part of the protection that makes the bet attractive in the first place.
Our stance. Take -2.0 at 1.75 or better and stop. The side can be right while the bigger handicap is wrong.
💡 Bankroll Tip: Losses Do Not Create Edge
A loss changes your bankroll. It does not change the probability of the next fixture. If the bankroll is smaller, the cash amount behind a 2% stake is smaller too. That is the whole point of percentage staking.
This week the slate also contracts from 16.5% to 11.0% because fewer positions clear the bar. Risk is a percentage, not a debt. Nothing on Sunday owes us what last weekend took away.
🏆 League Intel
Supplementary — no action required this week. Three prices we are watching after the card closes.
Premier League. Liverpool have conceded four in two league matches and are still around 1.51 away at Ipswich. Early lean: until the defensive absences ease, oppose the idea that a short match price automatically supports a big handicap.
Serie A. Como are already 1.87 away at Genoa after beating Napoli. If they win again tonight, the next price will carry even more momentum tax. Early lean: do not follow them blindly into Matchday 4.
Bundesliga. Leverkusen lost 3-2 at Elversberg and now return home as a short favourite against Union. Early lean: the bounce-back story is obvious and therefore likely expensive. We want a better number before buying the reaction.
📨 Before You Go
One thing to do now. Como -0.5 at 1.87 kicks off at 20:45 tonight. The rest can wait for team news and deeper Saturday markets.
Hold the floors. Como 1.80, City 1.68, Bayern 1.57, Dortmund 1.64, United 1.58. If a price crosses the floor, the bet disappears. No substitutes and no chasing.
All five settle by Sunday night, in the archive, whichever way they go.
Bet smart. Beat the close. Build the bankroll. 🎯
